Answer Engine Optimization (AEO): Make Your Expertise Easier to Find

A practical AEO guide to clear answers, trustworthy sources and checking how your business appears in AI answers.

What it means

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) focuses on making useful information easy for answer-oriented search and AI experiences to understand and reference. It does not guarantee inclusion in an AI response. Start with real questions your customers ask and answer them accurately on pages they can access.

Make content useful

Use descriptive headings that match the question, then give a direct answer supported by details, examples, and evidence. Keep important facts such as services, prices, policies and business identity consistent. Cite reliable sources for claims and update pages when information changes.

Connect evidence and tools

Measure cautiously. Record exact prompts, answer snapshots, model or platform, date and cited URLs. AI responses vary, so compare repeated observations rather than relying on a single answer. Shane’s AI Visibility Tracker helps record manually collected responses; Shane’s Gap Analyzer helps turn missing facts into content briefs.

Measure and improve

AEO complements technical SEO, not replaces it. Review page titles, crawlable content, internal links and structured data where relevant. Avoid inventing citations or claiming that structured data alone guarantees AI visibility.

Start with the questions customers actually ask

Collect questions from sales calls, support messages, onboarding sessions, site search and conversations with customers. Group them by intent: learning about a problem, comparing possible solutions, checking a provider or preparing to take action. Use the wording customers use rather than forcing every question into a keyword phrase.

Give each important question a clear home on the site. A page should answer one primary need while linking to related details such as pricing, implementation, service areas or limitations. If a question deserves only a short answer, include it in a useful FAQ or supporting section rather than creating a separate page with little additional value.

Make answers easy to verify

Lead with a direct response, then explain the reasoning, conditions and exceptions. Use specific examples and original evidence where you have it. Identify the author or organization responsible for the information, keep important business facts consistent and show when a page was reviewed if the date matters.

Do not create artificial question headings solely to attract answer engines. A useful answer should still help a person who arrives from a normal search result. Avoid unsupported claims, fake citations and structured data that describes information visitors cannot see.

Measure AEO as an observation, not a ranking score

Record the exact prompt, platform, date, answer excerpt and any citations you actually see. Repeat the same questions over time and keep the sample conditions consistent. A single answer may change because of wording, geography, personalization or model updates. Report the number of observations and their scope rather than claiming universal visibility.

Technical accessibility, crawlable content, clear internal links and accurate metadata remain useful foundations. AEO is an additional way to think about how people discover answers, not a replacement for sound SEO or a guarantee of inclusion in an AI response.
