Shane’s AI Visibility Tracker · Practical guide

Measure Brand Visibility in AI Answers Without Guessing

A repeatable manual process for checking brand mentions, competitor mentions and citations across answer engines.

Create a small, stable set of prompts reflecting buying questions, comparisons, local needs and common objections. Keep wording consistent between checks and record the date, AI platform, exact prompt and response reviewed.

Separate an explicit brand mention from a category mention or competitor recommendation. Save source URLs displayed in the answer and note which claims each source supports. If your brand is absent, record the context rather than treating every absence as a failure.

Repeat checks on a sensible schedule and compare like with like. AI answers vary by prompt, model, location and time, so avoid turning a small sample into a universal visibility score.

Shane’s AI Visibility Tracker is a browser-based log for prompts, AI platforms, brand and competitor mentions, and source notes. It supports searching and CSV export. Checks are entered manually; it does not query AI services or retrieve citations itself.

Use a repeatable prompt set

Choose questions a real customer might ask before naming your brand. Include informational, comparison and recommendation prompts, and keep branded questions separate from unbranded discovery questions. Record the exact wording, date, answer engine and any visible model or mode information. Small changes in the prompt can change the answer, so avoid treating different questions as one comparable test.

Repeat the same prompt set on a schedule you can maintain. Keep the geography, language and other conditions as consistent as possible. If a service changes its interface or answer format, note that in the record rather than silently combining results from different conditions.

Record evidence, not just a score

Save the relevant answer excerpt, whether the brand was mentioned, the competitors named and any displayed citations. Check what each source actually supports. A citation to a broad industry page does not necessarily substantiate a specific product claim. Separate a mention from a recommendation and a recommendation from a verified citation.

Keep screenshots or longer source records in an appropriate research archive and use the tracker’s notes field for a concise reference. If the tool’s mention indicator is based on text you enter, verify the classification manually; a note that says “not mentioned” may still contain the brand name.

Report the sample honestly

State the number of prompts, platforms and dates included in any summary. “The brand appeared in four of twelve reviewed answers in this prompt set” describes an observation. It does not measure all user experiences or prove that a website change caused the result.

Shane’s AI Visibility Tracker is a manual logging workspace with local records and CSV export. It does not query AI services or automatically retrieve citations. Use it to keep your observations consistent and auditable.
