Shane’s Traffic Rankings · Practical guide

Read Website Traffic Rankings Without Overinterpreting Them

Compare supplied traffic datasets while understanding the limits of third-party estimates.

Before comparing domains, identify the provider, collection method, geography, date range and whether visits are estimates or first-party analytics. Different tools can produce different numbers because their panels and models differ.

Import rank, domain, visits, desktop and mobile share, change, industry and market. Filter to comparable groups and look at movement across more than one period. A change in rank may reflect other domains moving, not necessarily a change in your own traffic.

Traffic estimates can help frame market research, but they do not reveal conversion quality, customer value or the exact number of visits. Pair them with first-party analytics and business outcomes before making budget or strategy decisions.

Shane’s Traffic Rankings imports supplied CSV datasets, filters and sorts records, and exports the selected view. It does not fetch traffic data from third-party providers.

Check the dataset before comparing domains

Read the source notes first. Confirm whether visits are estimates or first-party measurements, what geography is covered, which dates are included and how the provider defines a visit. Check that the industry and market labels are consistent. A dataset with missing values or duplicate domains can distort a ranking even when the chart looks tidy.

Preserve the original import and make a separate cleaned copy if you need to normalize domains or remove duplicates. Keep blank values blank; do not convert missing traffic into zero. If two providers use different methods, analyze their data separately rather than combining their figures into one ranking.

Interpret rank and traffic together

A domain can move up in rank even if its own traffic is unchanged, because other domains in the comparison set moved. Conversely, a site may gain visits while losing rank if the rest of the market grows faster. Review the underlying visit estimates and the size of the comparison group before describing a change.

Look at desktop and mobile shares, market differences and movement over several periods. Treat unusually large changes as a prompt to verify the source, date range and domain mapping. Do not infer revenue, conversion rate or customer quality from visit estimates alone.

Use rankings to frame the next research question

Rankings can help identify sites worth investigating, markets that deserve a closer look or datasets that need better coverage. Pair the observation with first-party analytics, search performance and actual business outcomes before changing budgets or strategy.

Shane’s Traffic Rankings filters and sorts datasets you import. It does not retrieve third-party traffic data. The tool organizes the numbers you provide; the source and methodology remain your responsibility.
